For palace and park lovers, we recommend visiting the residence of former president Viktor Yanukovych in Mezhyhirya. This is a new tourist thing to do in Kiev as the area was closed to the visitors till 2014.

There one can see helipad, boxing ring, inner road for high-speed driving, golf field, zoo, place to pasture horses, pheasant farm, trout pond and lotus, garage for 70 cars, pier with yachts.

Mezhyhirya became popular thanks to the interest to the Yanukovych house, but the history of this place is very interesting and ancient.

Before 1935 there was Mezhyhirya Monastery. After capital transfer of the USSR’s from Kharkov to Kiev in 1934 appeared necessity of government residence outside the city. Mezhyhirya location was chosen for this purpose. Before the demolition of the buildings of the monastery complex were photographed. In April 1935 Politburo issued a decree on the destruction of the entire complex, which was performed in the same year. During the demolition of a collection of manuscripts was discovered underground. It has been suggested that the books were found from the lost library of Yaroslav the Wise or the later period – the era of Zaporizhia Army. Only the well has remained from the monastery complex. During Soviet times it was the residence of S. Kosior, Nikita Khrushchev and Shcherbytsky. Location has been hidden from the public. Stalin and Brezhnev also stayed here during Kiev visit.

Honka

The main building of the residence is the so-called club house or Honka – from the name of the Finnish constructing company Honka.

4-storey Honka, Yanukovych’s presidential residence is the world’s largest palace built of timber. Almost all 1st level of the building takes the knight’s hall of president. The 2nd floor is designed for guests with bedrooms and living room with stained-glass windows. The main lobby of Honka occupies more than 200 square meters and is decorated with incredible parquet and fireplace made of marble.

Palace on the Water

In 2011 Palace on the Water was build. Its length is about 50 meters. Windows are decorated in a porthole – round shape. The landing stage is arranged as private office and reception hall, which ends with bandstand. Palace features fine wood, gold leaf, marble and cut glass.

Zoo

There is a private zoo with rare animals in Yanukovych palace. Here you can see kangaroos, Australian emus, American rheas, peacocks, pheasants, geese, earthy hare. There is an artificial lake, which is fed by water from ten artesian wells.

You can also visit exposition of 70 rare motor vehicles.
