Kiev Motherland vs Statue of Liberty – which is higher?

Kiev Motherland statue is visible from almost anywhere within the Dnieper River left bank. This statue is the highest monument in Ukraine and one of the highest in the world.

The Motherland or Rodyna Mat statue together with its pedestal is 102 meters high. At the same time the Statue of Liberty in New York City stands 93 meters.

The Motherland statue was opened by Soviet president Leonid Brezhnev in 1981 in honor of victory in Second World War.

The stainless steel statue itself is 62 m (203 ft) height and 560 tons by weight. The sword in the statue’s right hand is 16 m (52 ft) long weighing 9 tons. The frame of the statue goes 17, 8 meters beneath the ground.

Designers assure that the Motherland will stay for at least 150 years and is able to withstand seismic and dynamic loads.

There are two elevators inside the monument, one vertical climbs up to the straight, another rises at an angle of 75 degrees. There is an observation area in the sword at a height of 92 meters.

Construction of the Motherland had strict deadline and many assembling peculiarities. The highest in the Soviet Union 100 – meter crane was used during monument construction. Because of lack of time giant crane was cut into pieces of a blowtorch, and thrown into the Dnieper (where it stays till today).  Specially trained climbing teams were used during welding works.

After the accomplishment the Motherland statue had plastic surgery in order to increase the nose, as it looked out of proportion from the bottom.

The sword of the statue was cut a little bit because the tip of the sword was higher than the cross of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

There is a huge museum of IIWW inside the statue. Nowadays museum display is supplemented by ATO history. The Motherland statue and IIWW memorial are visited by about 750 thousand people annually.
